The optional subject can make a major difference in UPSC Mains because it carries 500 marks through two papers of 250 marks each. A high score does not come from reading more books than other aspirants. It comes from understanding the official syllabus, selecting limited sources, writing answers regularly and revising the same material multiple times.
The aim should not be to chase a fixed score or copy a topper’s strategy. The aim should be to develop command over both papers so that you can write relevant, structured and complete answers within three hours.
