So, if you’re a big science-fiction fan, you’re likely in a position of looking for stuff that strikes a chord with you. Whether it’s TV shows, awesome books, and you certainly can’t help but checking out the movies out now just in case something’s out that you may really like. Let’s face it: sci-fi isn’t always well-represented, and when it is, it tends to be a little, well, eh. Luckily, the last few years have showcased some amazing sci-fi cinema, so if that’s your jam, you’re in luck.
But, as is the case with some more fringe genres or hard-to-get-right genres, you may actually have a tough time finding a movie that really gets the whole science-fiction feel. This is where you may have to depend more on the major tenets of sci-fi as a whole. Basically, you’re looking for the the essence of sci-fi rather than the full-fledged sci-fi adventure you wish you could get. Then again, this may not necessarily be so bad. In fact, it can be quite the philosophical exercise for those of you who really want to flex your science-fiction knowledge.
If you or someone you know are big fans of sci-fi & are really looking forward to a good movie this holiday season, here are a few worth checking out ASAP:
Jumanji: The Next Level — You have the return of characters the audience knew before, but they now operate within new bodies & personalities. Moreover, there is the complication of predestined fate for the crew & whether this adventure may be the last for one of them.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood — “The needs of the many outweigh…” “The needs of the few.” “Or the one.” Every sci-fi fan knows the gut-punch of these famous movie lines, and as such, the world still mourns the loss of Mr. Rogers, the TV icon. This film has been highly anticipated for some time.
Ford v. Ferrari — While not quite the “Space Race” of the mid-20th century, the true story of Ford’s attempt to upend Ferrari’s dominance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans is about as close as it gets to the same intensity here on Earth. This is the ultimate car movie for actual car people.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch — OK, so this is an oddball, but sci-fi is all about the exploration of fictional realities, parallel universes, and alien lifeforms. We’re pretty sure the characters of this holiday classic qualify.
Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker — This is THE sci-fi movie everyone wants to watch! So far, Baby Yoda is filling the void, but Episode IX is going to break box office records for sure.
OK, so many of the movies out now aren’t completely sci-fi specific, but again, fans of the genre have come to expect this. As such, this is why it’s important to understand & appreciate the elements of what makes sci-fi so great so that you can actually see it in other film genres. A quick look over the list of movies visit here shows that while some of these films aren’t quite on the nose when it comes to sci-fi, they: 1) create rules by which the characters operate; and 2) are grounded in reality, even if it’s a reality that based on your own suspension of disbelief. How’s that for being really meta, huh?!?
Flix Brewhouse in Little Elm is just the place to watch all of the latest movies out now, as well as enjoy the best food and craft beer around North Texas.
